Cold greenhouse group
This group owes its name to the fact that the plants shown here in the summer months spend the winter crowded together in a frost-proof cold greenhouse. The predominantly woody plant species occur naturally in areas with a mainly Mediterranean or subtropical climate. Temperatures there rarely fall below 0°C. Frosts are rare, short-lived and of low intensity. With the exception of Antarctica, such conditions can be found on all continents of the world, which means that species from all continents are represented in the cold greenhouse group.
During the summer months, most of the cold greenhouse plants can be found here in group 1. Large pots with various species can also be found in the entrance area of the garden in front of the cold greenhouse. Right next to the cold house at the corner of the succulent group is the Canary Islands group, which focuses on the frost-sensitive flora of the extremely species-rich Canary Islands. Palms and cycads are shown further up in the garden with the conifers. All these plants are moved into the cold greenhouse in late autumn. They would not survive the cold Viennese winter outdoors.
