Cold greenhouse
The Botanical Garden's cold greenhouse is used to overwinter frost-sensitive plants. In late autumn, the plants are moved from the open spaces around the greenhouses to the cold greenhouse. The plants are then so densely packed that there is no way through. Due to the cramped conditions, the cold greenhouse is not accessible to visitors in winter.
In the summer months, the cold greenhouse plants thrive best outdoors. They are therefore cultivated in pots or wooden tubs, which allows the gardeners to transport them using a tractor, since they are far too heavy to carry.
The cold greenhouse is usually cleared out between the end of April and the beginning of May, when heavy frosts are no longer expected. The empty cold greenhouse is used for exhibitions and events in summer.
