Canary Islands Group

Right next to the cold greenhouse at the corner of the succulent group is the Canary Islands group. Typical representatives of the flora of the Canary Islands grow here alongside species of Austrian flora that are related to typical Canarian species and resemble them in appearance.

Canary Island pines grow on dry lava soil in their homeland. They comb out the moist air and clouds with their long needles. The dripping water is then absorbed by the roots.

Of the approximately 40 species of the genus Aeonium worldwide, 34 occur only on the Canary Islands. They grow there in almost all habitats, from the rocky coast to the upper mountain regions. They have developed adapted to habitats that are difficult or impossible for other plants to colonise and where competition is relatively low. Almost all species here are usually distributed over very small areas.
