Hallstatt Museum

A World Heritage house

When systematic archaeological excavations begin on the salt mountain in 1846, the village already has a small museum. Friedrich Simony, a young explorer, founds it 2 years before.

A few years after excavations commence it becomes clear that important archaeological finds are to be made here in the mountains around Hallstatt. So important, that the term “Hallstatt culture” comes into use in 1874. From now on, this is how the Early Iron Age in Central Europe from 800 to 450 BC is described. Collectors and museums from around the world soon want to get their hands on the desirable Hallstatt exhibits.

Today Hallstatt Museum – known as the World Heritage Museum as of 2002 – impresses with the latest technology and a multimedia journey through 7,000 years of history. Admire finds from the burial ground as well as documentation of the Great Fire of 1750 which nearly destroys the entire village.

An exciting adventure for the whole family and a great end to your tour of Hallstatt.
