Castle Grub

An eccentric’s residence

Castle Grub, which you can see in the image, is built in 1522 and can be found on the opposite side of Hallstatt Lake.

In 1658 Count Christoph Eyssel von Eysselsberg, whom we have already met in the Hallstatt parish church in the crypt of the same name, procures the castle in 1658. According to Eysselsberg’s last will and testament, his corpse should be transported across the lake every 50 years.

But the castle has several other illustrious owners in its colourful history. For instance the ambassador of Tsar Alexander II, who makes alterations to Castle Grub and gives it its current appearance.

A spooky legend surrounds the building. On the frozen Hallstatt Lake, 2 young counts are once supposed to have argued over a girl so loudly that the ice breaks and they and their company drown.
