Hallstatt market square

The golden centre

We begin our tour of Hallstatt on the beautiful marketplace in its historic centre. The pastel-coloured, tile-roofed houses with floral decoration are a sought-after photographic subject for visitors from around the world.

Hallstatt market square, with the impressive Holy Trinity column at its centre, is steeped in history and has experienced plenty in its colourful lifetime. For instance the Great Fire of 1750, to which more than 30 houses fall victim. Or the heavy storm of 2013 when the marketplace is buried by a mudslide.

But the marketplace would not be the centre of Hallstatt if it were not the scene of celebration too. The marketplace is the starting point for the springtime procession for the Feast of Corpus Christi, which continues on the lake if the weather is fine. In the summer there are concerts, folk evenings and the Children’s Festival at the end of July. In Advent the Hallstatt Christmas Market creates a magical, romantic atmosphere.

Enjoy now the 3 points of interest from Highlight 1, “The market square”, and then continue your tour of Hallstatt with Highlight 2, “The Evangelical Church”, which can be found right next to the market square.
