The pear tree

The most famous plant in the village

Hallstatt is a place full of history. History stretching back over several thousands of years. The pear tree on Seestraße is not quite so old, but nevertheless impressive.

It stands directly in front of a house from 1693, winding up the façade, and is the subject of countless snapshots.

This is an espalier tree, typical of the Salzkammergut region. The proximity of the wall gives espalier trees more warmth and they are able to bear fruit that normally only grows in sunnier climes, such as peaches or apricots.

Pruned many times over the years, the branches of the pear tree frame the windows of the house perfectly. No wonder this is the most photographed house in Hallstatt.
