Fishing on Hallstatt Lake

An old industry with sustainability

Hallstatt Lake, with an area of 8.6 m² and a depth of over 120 m is one of the deepest lakes in Austria. Viewed from the air, it resembles a Norwegian fjord. And its water is just as cool. Even in high summer the surface temperature rarely goes over 20 degrees.

The cool, clear water of Hallstatt Lake is ideal for regional fish like coregonus, arctic char or lake trout.

The Austrian Federal Forestry Office conducts professional fishing on Hallstatt lake according to century-old tradition and with sustainability in mind. The number of amateur anglers is controlled and around 7-10 tonnes of fish may be caught each year. In this way the number taken from the lake never surpasses the number that grow back.
