Ribbed vaulting

The ribbed vaulting

Exemplary Gothic architecture

The ribbed vaulting in the Hallstatt parish church is a beautiful example of interior design in Gothic churches.

The vaulting over the square main room consists of 4 simple diamond stars. The 4-part star occurs with the fanning out of the diagonal ribs and is mostly used in the vaulting above small spaces.

The keystone is an important aspect of ribbed vaulting. In the Early Gothic period these protrude and dominate but in Late Gothic buildings such as the parish church in Hallstatt they are considerably smaller and sometimes even replaced by plates.
