The stables of the Spanish Riding School

Baroque splendour for noble horses

If you enter Josefsplatz from the narrow Reitschulgasse, you will have a fantastic view beneath the brick archway joining the Stallburg with the Redouten Wing of the Hofburg into one of the most beautiful Renaissance arcade courtyards in Vienna.

Behind the gate, which is also from the Renaissance period, lie the stables of the famous Lipizzan horses from the Spanish Riding School. 72 stallions are housed here.

The stables have mostly retained their Baroque appearance, yes, even the marble horse troughs are from the 18th century.

However the stables are regularly adapted and renovated. Around the mid-19th century wood panelling and metal poles are added to the horseboxes. And between 2002 and 2008 additional horseboxes are built, along with new rooms for the staff and a modern ventilation system.
