The Neue Burg museums

From papyrus to sword

The Neue Burg, the tract of the Hofburg on Vienna’s Heldenplatz at a right angle to the Leopold Wing and bordering directly onto Burggarten, houses 5 museums: the Ephesus Mueum, the Hunting and Arms Chamber, the Collection of Historic Musical Instruments, the Papyrus Museum and the former Museum of Ethnology, now called the Weltmuseum.

The collection of Historic Musical Instruments has the world’s most important stock of Renaissance and Baroque instruments at its disposal, while at the Ephesus Museum you can admire the remains of the ancient city in which the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders, once stood. On display at the Hunting and Arms Chamber are armour and weaponry worn by Hapsburg knights through the centuries at tournaments and in battle.

And the Papyrus Collection with some 180,000 objects not only counts as one of the largest of its kind worldwide, it has been on the UNESCO documentary heritage list since October 2001.
