The Spanish Riding School in Vienna is the only institution in the world which has practiced for more than 450 years and continues to cultivate classical equitation in the Renaissance tradition of the „Haute Ecole“ – which can also be found on UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage of humanity. The objective of the „Haute Ecole“ is to achieve perfection, brilliance, precision and harmony – in short the unity or oneness of horse and rider.

The name “Spanish Riding School” goes back to the 16th century:  Ferdinand 1st, the later emperor oft he Holy Roman Empire, grew up in Spain and brought along herds of Spanish horses to the Viennese court when he took over the regency. The Lipizzan horses, developed over the centuries through the breeding of Spanish horses, Berber horses and Arabs, are best suited for the „Haute Ecole“.
