Excerpt from Empress Elisabeth’s poem
Oh no, they celebrate today
The court of nobles
Anyone can approach
If they’re of pure blood
And so the order of the day
Is to keep the plebs away
They’re out in force
The security officials
What a great honour to earn
By having relatives
By God, in the melee, what is to become
Of the Habsburg offspring?
Of this valuable ornament
Which burdens every country (…)
She lets Maria Theresa speak:
You called me down to you
But what am I to see?
The old ponytail has stayed the same
For one hundred and eight years!
You are still so proud and blinkered
As you were in your prime (…)
Maria Theresa orders the guests of honour to
prepare a table for the people:
You, Habsburg offspring, come forth!
Come out of the shadow of your tents
Be today a chorus of servants
Of the people by the grace of God
