Innerer Burgplatz
zoom in zoom out

The copper engraving (1725) shows a view of the “Innerer Burghof”. Originally it was simply called “Burgplatz” (castle courtyard). When the “Äußerer Burgplatz” (outer castle courtyard), today’s Heldenplatz, is laid in 1819, the name “Burgplatz” is changed to “Innerer Burgplatz “ (inner castle courtyard). After the statue of Emperor Franz II/I is erected in 1846, it is called “Franzensplatz” and receives his final name in 1919. In the background on the right the Swiss Gate is visible.
