The right hand engaged column
a vulva
Another theory, held by the church, is that the mysterious sculptures of a vulva and phallus represent, quite simply, the creation story of Adam and Eve. Incidentally the heathen towers are referred to as the ‘male’ (left) and ‘female’ (right) tower. Since the left hand tower stands exactly 1m higher than the right, it begs the question of whether the left column (phallus) and tower symbolise the power of masculine over feminine - an attitude certainly not foreign to those involved - physically or spiritually - in the building of St. Stephen’s.
