Organ stand

Construction of the organ stand begins in 1512 and the project takes a year to complete. Initially the commission goes to master builder Jörg Öchsl. But the Viennese stone masons complain so much about him that half way through, master craftsman Anton Pilgram is hauled in from Brno to finish the job, supplanting Öchsl in the process. Like the pulpit, the base of the organ balcony is a sexfoil, a circle divided into six equal elements. The balcony protrudes out a little over halfway up the wall and is cut through by a six-pointed star. Originally built to house the organ, the balcony mirrors the Füchsel baldachin opposite. It’s here that the singers used to stand, in view of the organist.
