Wimperg and crockets

The numeric symbolism can be most clearly seen on the wimpergs, gable-shaped ornamentation. Wimpergs are composed of circular segments – some split into 3 (trefoil), others into 4 (quatrefoil) or even 5 (quintefoil). Wimpergs can be placed over windows or project out of the roof. “What protects us from the wind, will save us” is a common belief in the Middle Ages and such features are believed to repel demons and evil spirits. Wimpergs are often decorated with carved, twisted leaves or crockets.
