The arcades
Ornaments in Traunsee marble
The famous arcades at Ort Castle probably come from the Renaissance and appear on images of the castle from 16th century. The columns are made of red limestone, so-called Traunsee marble, from the east bank of the lake.
The picture features an interesting detail, an old construction technique for connecting stone blocks used from ancient times to the Early Modern Age. A hole is made in each block and a metal bracket inserted. Lead is used to fill the gaps.
The craftsman’s signature can also be found on the brackets of the arcade walkway at Seeschloss Ort.
