The old woman with the golden bowl

An old woman, in all likelihood a procuress, catches some of the shower in a bowl. Who else would dare present his commissioner with this brazen reference to bought love but Titian, treasured court painter?

In around 1600 the piece is sent as part of a consignment of paintings from Cardinal Montalto to Rudolf II in Prague (Holy Roman Emperor from 1576). Rudolf II is an art lover and must have become acquainted with Titian’s work during his formative years at the court of Philip II in Spain.
