The background
A faint glimmer of light shines through the open door in the background and appears to be the only visible light source. Deep, impenetrable shadows dominate the room, surrounding the little prince in a threatening manner.
In his use of light and shade Velázquez anticipates the brevity of the child’s life, with an artist’s intuition as it were.
