Canons and pistols

Canon barrels and pistols make up the shoulders and chest of the figure. Here the political significance of Arcimboldo’s paintings becomes especially clear: the 4 elements of the series relate to Hapsburg dominance. Fire symbolises war and the emperor as supreme commander controls both. In the Chain of the Golden Fleece, Order of the House of Hapsburg we find all the tools necessary to ignite a flame. Canon barrels, gunpowder and wicks complete the military aspect of the allegory.
