The sheet

The sheet which scarcely covers the young woman is interesting for a number of reasons. Firstly its subtle arrangement, wound around her right upper arm and at the same time barely covering her private parts. But the sheet also has an important role in the composition of the painting.

It continues the narrow strip of mountain range on to the right upper arm and so connects near and far. And its point, reappearing behind her right upper arm, has another function. It’s where windowsill, landscape and body intersect.
