The forearm

Her left elbow and right forearm are much too big, something you won’t notice at first glance. Taken as an artistic whole however, all components are balanced. This astounding fact reveals a crucial aspect of the Renaissance painters’ way of working; rather than copying nature their aim was to reinvent and reassemble.

The subject of a painting is invented, composed as it were. A visual composition, the details of which, whether landscape, nature or people, go beyond an exact photographic reproduction.
