The Death of the Virgin

The Death of the Virgin

The tempera painting on the left of the middle section shows the Death of Mary. The Mother of God lies on her deathbed, surrounded by the Apostles. Christ stands before her welcoming her soul in the form of a tiny figure. The figure is half-dressed in light cloth, rich in folds and scattered with gold stars. Its hands are folded in front of its naked chest and a halo shines behind its head.

2 angels are already bearing the throne complete with crown above the dying Mary, portending the Coronation depicted in the tempera painting on the right. The Apostles are carrying out the rite of benediction. It’s striking how in-the-moment the scene is, portrayed by the anonymous artist with surprising emotion, with Christ turning lovingly towards Mary in a seemingly intimate mother-son bond.
