The Coronation of the Virgin

The Coronation of the Virgin

The events of the painting on the left are continued in that of the right. Mary is crowned by Christ in Heaven following Her Death and Assumption. The composition is determined by the architecture of the throne, with a level assigned to each figure or group. The angels are at the bottom with the larger figures in the middle and Christ and Mary on top.

Christ himself wears a crown rich in jewels and reaches with his right hand to place the crown on Mary’s head. In his left hand he holds a thin sceptre with a finial at its point. The throne is in the form of an extended hexagon with an ornamental scarcement.

The heaviness of the architecture is toned down by the arcades beneath the throne while the 2 angels seem to be supporting its weight. The figure on the left is John the Baptist, the figure of the right the biblical Church Father, Bishop Augustine.
