In the Romanesque period, Jesus on the cross is generally portrayed as Holy Triumphator, even wearing a king’s crown, with 1 nail through each hand and foot. This is referred to as the 4-nail type.

In the Gothic period a suffering Jesus with a crown of thorns becomes more common, his legs crossed and a single nail through both feet. This is referred to as the 3-nail type.
