The host window and lunula
The window behind which the host is presented, is in mountain crystal. Because of its cut the crystal serves as a magnifying glass on monstrances and relic vessels.
Symbolically mountain crystal stands for clarity and purity. In relation to the host, the Body of Christ, the clarity and purity of the Son of God is emphasised. The semicircular bow which bears the host is known as the lunula, deriving from the Latin for ‘crescent-shaped’.
The lunula, added by Provost Gottfried von Roleman in the second half of the 18th century, is gold and bears 47 brilliants, 7 emeralds and a garnet. A depiction of the Adoration of the Magi can be found on the garnet.
