Margrave Leopold III.
Margrave Leopold III kneels at the foot of the elder tree. With folded hands he gazes up at the Marian apparition. The ducal hat he has laid aside and his doublet are fashioned in almandine, his sword is decorated with emeralds and brilliants. Leopold III, known as the Saint (also the Good or the Pious), is Margrave of the Bavarian Eastern March (Ostarrichi) from 1095 to 1136. He is canonised by Pope Innocent VIII on January 6, 1485, in 1663 Emperor Leopold I elevates him to patron saint of Austria. The anniversary of his death, on November 15, is a national holiday.
