The ceiling fresco in the Marble Hall
The dome fresco in the Marble Hall is created by imperial chamber artist Daniel Gran in 1749. It bears the title: “The Glory and Majesty of the House of Austria, started by the Babenbergs, raised by the Hapsburgs and to be continued in Lorraine”.
Gran shows the Babenberg and Hapsburg clans in a continuing line as if they are the same family. Leopold III can be seen on the medallion in the centre as founder of the monastery and local patron saint. Below, an allegory of Austrian majesty comprising the most important territorial crowns: the Imperial Crown, the Hungarian Crown of Saint Stephen and the Saint Wenceslas Crown of Bohemia.
The imperial herald stands behind with the Austrian heraldic banner. On his right we find Austrian valour, represented by Babenberg Leopold V. The wedding of Maria Theresa and Francis Stefan of Lorraine is visible on the opposite quarter of the fresco, symbolic of the continuation of the House of Austria through a new Hapsburg-Lorraine dynasty.
