The Last Supper
On the eve of the crucifixion, Jesus and his disciples come together for the final time. Again the position of Judas here is unusual. Normally Jesus’ traitor appears at the end of the table and can be recognised - in Leonardo da Vinci’s famous painting for example - by his money bag. Here we find him sitting on the floor, centre front. He is dipping his right hand into a bowl while at the same time accepting a piece of bread from Jesus.
In Mark’s Gospel Jesus identifies his traitor by saying, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me, one who is eating with me.” The ApostlesPaul and Peter are seated left and right of Jesus.
