Mary, Mother of God
Mary is supported in her grief by her sister, Mary of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. The man on the far right is Jesus’ beloved disciple and writer of John’s Gospel, the Apostle John. He is normally portrayed as a young man with short hair and no beard.
Telling Mary, “Woman, behold, your son!” and John, “Behold, your mother!” Jesus entrusts John with the care of his mother from the cross, a duty John carries out for the remainder of her earthly life.
