Crucified

Crucified

The centre of the final register is dominated by Jesus on the cross. The death on the cross and the resurrection complete the Heilsgeschichte. The image of Christ’s suffering and death is the most important theme in Christian art and serves as a symbol for the redemption of mankind.

Soldiers are standing on either side of the cross. One is piercing Jesus’ side with a spear to determine whether he is dead. Another is offering him a wet sponge on a stick. Shortly before his death Jesus asks that his thirst be quenched and receives a sponge soaked in vinegar.

After this he utters his famous last words, “It is finished” and dies. The sight of her dying son is too much for Mary, who sinks to the ground.
