The cope

The cope

The cope is the largest and most ornate article of clothing. Its Latin name, ‘pluviale’, means ‘rain coat’ and refers to its original function. It’s principally worn for processions and prayer services.

White patterned silk forms the base, metal threads are used in the embroidery and gold yarn, blue silk and small pieces of metal in the appliqué. The semicircular piece is bordered in blue and gold. The front is decorated with intricate angel figures.
