The red gala litter

The red gala litter

Showpiece of the Imperial Carriage Museum

Litters were a popular mode of transport until the railway gained prevalence. They were carried by horses or mules, which moved more softly. These 2-seater gala litters were created for the Viennese Court; a truly luxurious vehicle (even a toilet is built in at the back)!

Exactly 11,000 gilded brass nails decorate the red leather covering. According to the latest research these litters were first used in 1835 to convey the Austrian archducal hat on the occasion of the last act of hereditary homage.
