The Brunnenhaus (‘spring house’)
where the candelabra now resides
The Brunnenhaus or ‘spring house’, built in the first half of the 14th century, still displays colourful 19th century features with the relief of Christ’s head as the keystone. There never has been a spring here but rather in the Middle Ages we find simple wash basins which have to be refilled on a regular basis. The remaining medieval part of Klosterneuburg Monastery can be found to the north west of the abbey church.
The cloister, the construction of which spans from 1250 to 1350, boasts a particularly impressive 6-piece cross-ribbed vault. Following a fire in 1330 it is fitted with valuable stained glass, several fragments of which have been preserved in the monastery museum and in the chapel of Saint Leopold.
