Leopold III.

Leopold III.

It isn’t just his halo that distinguishes the figure on the right side of the main panel from the rest. You could say that Leopold III., Saint Leopold as the gold lettering tells us, is the posthumous instigator of the Babenberg Family Tree, since the work is commissioned on the occasion of his canonisation on January 6, 1485. Dressed in cardinal red, the famous Babenberg is leading a child with each hand. At his feet you can see the 5 eagle coat of arms, today the coat of arms of Lower Austria in a slightly altered form. In the background are his most important foundations: Kleinmariazell Monastery on the left and Klosterneuburg Monastery on the top right, recognisable by the coat of arms.

You can also see Heiligenkreuz Monastery. Here the artist has made an error. The 2 monks in front of Kleinmariazell Monastery are dressed in white. This is the colour worn by the Cistercian Order - so they really belong to Heiligenkreuz Monastery, also founded by Leopold. In his time the monks at Kleinmariazell are Benedictine and wear dark robes.
