Casino Baden

From “cure house” to gambling temple

When the completion of the southern railway starts bringing in more day trippers from Vienna in the mid-19th century, Baden is crying out for a fashionable Kurhaus (cure house) with an event hall. One is opened in 1886, with a drinking hall added in 1928.

In April, 1934 the first casino is then opened in the Kurhaus, which operates until the end of August, 1944. After this the confusion of WW2 and the subsequent Allied Occupation make running a casino impossible.

When the Russian troops leave in 1955, gambling recommences in the casino in Wassergasse at Badener Hof, while the cure house takes up its original role as an event centre, which it remains for over 10 years.

In 1968 the Kurhaus is changed into a congress building with a new hall for 1,200 people and the casino returns in a provisional form. But it is now clear that extensive renovations must be undertaken to maintain the casino’s location at Baden.

From 1977 the congress building and drinking hall are remodelled several times and finally reopened in 1995 as Casino Baden. At this time the casino with its congress and event centre is the largest casino in Europe. In 2007 the Games Hall and the restaurant areas are adapted once more.
