The Lido

The largest artificial beach in Austria

Baden’s thermal lido offers a unique combination of historic architecture and modern bathing fun on an area of over 42,000m².

In 1926, after the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the municipality of Baden has the thermal lido in the Art Deco-style installed in just 16 weeks. The main building with a length of 160m is the second longest building in Baden then, surpassed only by Weilburg Castle which still exists at that time.

When it is opened the lido boasts the largest swimming pool in Europe and invokes the flair of old Austrian baths on the Adriatic with its huge artificial beach. 50 wagons of sand are brought in from Melk for this purpose.

In 1930 the baths become one of the largest facilities of its kind in Austria by integrating part of the grounds of Weilburg Castle.

Today there are 2 swimming pools, 2 sulphuric pools, massage jets, a flow passage and a diving tower at the guests’ disposal. But in order to preserve the costly resources of the sulphuric waters, the thermal pools are no longer heated by the hot springs alone.
