Tobias, the son of Tobit, is sent by his blind father to the neighbouring town to fetch money deposited with relatives. On the way, he makes the acquaintance of a traveller. This traveller is none other than the archangel Rafael, disguised in the form of a human being.
On the journey, Tobias catches a fish with Rafael's help. Rafael teaches him about the fish's special powers. The gall can heal the blind and the heart and liver drive away demons.
When Tobias arrives in the distant town, he meets his relatives. But they are in great turmoil, because a demon has taken possession of the beautiful daughter Sara. Tobias, however, knows how to help immediately. He drives the demon away with the heart and liver of the fish. Sara and Tobias fall in love, marry and return to Tobias' town with the money. There Tobias heals his blind father with the gall of the fish.
