Traditional costumes in Noricum and Pannonia
Clothing of the past
In the regions of Noricum and Pannonia, once part of the Roman Empire, "barbarian" costumes can be found among the women. Despite the relatively large geographical area, there is a largely uniform basic costume with local differences in headgear and jewellery.
The basic costume consists of a chamisia and a peplos, which is fastened to the shoulders with eye-catching winged and double-buttoned brooches, with the decorations protruding widely. Married women often also wore a cloak called a palla and, depending on the region, various head coverings. In full-length figures, the peplos was worn with a deep puff, which is particularly recognisable in the depictions of girls.
A decorative belt with metal fittings is a regional costume element. This can be easily recognised in depictions of girls without cloaks, and its reconstruction is possible on the basis of finds of the metal parts. Due to the limited tradition (many depictions of women can be found in medallions), we can only say that this belt was demonstrably worn by girls in Noricum and Pannonia and, at least in part, by women in Pannonia. There also seem to have been corded belts.
