Only the five ‘signposted’ inns were entitled to serve the coaches carrying mail, passengers or freight and to accommodate the travellers. Such inns were usually
near the post office and had large stalls behind them. Several of the elaborate signposts can still be seen on Linzer Straße: Zum weißen Rößl, Zum weißen Lamm,
Zum goldenen Ochsen and Zum goldenen Kreuz.
