This was the site of a tavern and a butcher’s stall in the Middle Ages. After two fires the Abbot relinquished the property to the burghers in 1575 to build a town hall. The Baroque style façade was largely refurbished after the town fire in 1847. After WW I individuals donating to the ‘Fund for Widows and Orphans’ left nails and copper platelets on the ‘fortified gate’ (Wehrtor) as a permanent witness to their charity.
