zoom in zoom out

Into the countryside looking Pulverturm was built in the late 15th century. It initially served as a guard and defense tower, because Krems biggest attack area was the southeast. The other sides were harder to conquer: in the south the tributaries of the Danube, on the west in front of the Steiner Tor the marshes of then untamed and unregulated river and to the north the mountain slopes. The observation tower was used for the first time as a powder magazine in the in the 17th century - probably because after a few explosions in the inner city powder magazine got too dangerous.
