Stop 23 - Rothenhof and Pichelhof
The Pichelhof, for example, is the former reading yard of the Augustinian Monastery of St. Pölten and an architectural jewel among the former monastic reading yards. Harmonious proportions structure the building, the left-hand ground-floor windows have wrought-iron monastery grilles, the upper-floor windows have window baskets with classicist decor.
In the middle, a flat triangular pediment shows a late baroque fresco. It represents the Genoveva of Brabant with a doe. According to legend, Genoveva, the wife of Count Palatine Siegfried, was accused of infidelity and rejected together with her newborn son. She found refuge in a cave in the forest, where she had her child suckled by a doe sent by Our Lady Mary. It is not certain whether Genoveva actually existed as a historical person.
