The remains of the Weißenkirchner Tor
In the west of the Old Town

If you arrive at Dürnstein from the west you will find a picturesque scene on the downhill road in the direction of the Danube. Here you will see winegrowers’ houses as well as the former dwellings of bargemakers and wagoners and pass wonderful Art Nouveau villas before reaching the former Weißenkirchen Gate.

Unfortunately only the base of the arched gateway is still recognisable as part of the house at number 43. The rest had to be torn down in the first half of the 20th century, as the old Wachaustraße still passed through the town at that time and the ever-increasing number of vehicles could no longer fit through the narrow gate.

The magnificent houses you can admire here are built right up to the mountain rock. In some cases the rock is integrated into the houses to make best possible use of the limited space. The former executioner of Dürnstein lived here too, outside the town wall.

On the forecourt in front of the castle, there is a wonderful view of the Wachau region and the unique course of the Danube through this valley.
