Internet, phone and money

Georgian currency
Since 1995, the Georgian currency has been called lari, which is commonly abbreviated to GEL. A lari consists of 100 tetri. There are banknotes of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 lari, plus 1 and 2-lari coins. Coins of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 tetri do exist, but these are rarely used due to their low value. One GEL currently (spring 2022) corresponds to around EUR 0.30. Payment is usually made in cash, only in international standard hotels and restaurants in larger cities can you pay by credit card. You can also withdraw money from most ATMs in larger cities with a credit or debit card, but expect a fee of €5-6 per withdrawal.

Internet and phone
The international dialling code for Georgia is +995. Georgian landline numbers usually start with a "2", mobile phone numbers with a "5" or "7". In any case, you should get a Georgian SIM card during your stay in Georgia for making phone calls and especially for surfing the Internet. The roaming fees are very high and SIM cards from 10-15 GEL are available almost everywhere.
