Accommodation

Hotels, guesthouses, hostels and camping

In the section Hotels and Restaurants you can find a list of numerous hotels, guesthouses and other places that offer accomodation throughout the Samtskhe-Javakheti region.

Here are just some general words:
What kind of accommodation you choose will mostly depend on where you are and what your travel budget looks like. Bigger hotels of European standards are only available in major cities. Although "major" is again relative: Akhaltsikhe, the biggest city in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region, has around 18,000 inhabitants.

Backpacker hostels
Typical backpacker hostels, where you can sometimes get a bed for under 10 GEL, only exist in major cities. Breakfast is usually not included, because you are expected to prepare it yourself in the communal kitchen. But there can be one advantage: young people working in hostels may speak English, which reduces the Georgian language barrier for once.

Family-run guesthouses
The most popular form of cheap accommodation are family-run guesthouses or hostels, where prices for the night start at around 10-15 GEL per person. For this price do not except breakfast the next morning, but usually there is hot (or at least warm) water and very often Wi-Fi, even in remote areas. It is normally possible to get home-cooked meals here at a good price too. The language barrier is very often a problem, as the older generation in Georgia learned Russian as a second language and not English.

Small and middle-class hotels
Rooms at smaller hotels are around 40-60 GEL per person and night, but still do not always expect a private shower or bath. Very often these smaller and middle-class hotels are more expensive than guesthouses, but not necessarily better.

International standard hotels
If you are looking for a room with a private bath you should probably book at one of the modern hotels, e.g. in Akhaltsikhe or Borjomi, where prices start at 60-80 GEL/night and can be up to 300 GEL/night.

Garden camping
And if your budget is really tight you can always go camping. In Georgia free camping is allowed almost everywhere outside of the major cities. In some areas you can even camp in people's backyard, pay 5-10 GEL a night and use their toilet in return. Georgians call that "garden camping".
