Colorful houses
When the Doukhobors were forced out of their original Russian home in the first half of the 19th century, they brought their style of clothing and architecture to Georgia. Some of the houses are made entirely of wood, others have stone walls and roofs covered with peat.
Doukhobor architecture also reflects the way of life in a harsh climate at more than 2000 meters above sea level, where winters are long and hard and summers are short, mostly consisting of preparing for the next winter. Nevertheless, the blue, green and white paint of the old-style wooden Doukhobor houses match the multiple colors of their traditional garments and blend harmoniously with the local landscape.
