Tiefer Weg and Viehtrift – the lane of wine cellars in Stixneusiedl

The picturesque winemaking area of Stixneusiedl is first mentioned in 1335 and lies on the southern slopes of the Arbesthal hillsides. Its name comes from the noble family that repopulates the area and establishes the village, the Stuchs family. They create the town systematically; to the left and right of the village street a row of 18 houses is built. Each house owns fields on different wine slopes, drawn from a lot.

Even then winemaking is important and the Stuchs family erect a grand wine cellar, called the Herrschaftskeller or masters’ cellar. It is easy to spot with its splendid Baroque, yellow-white gabled façade. About a tenth of the wine harvest has to be handed over to the Stuchs and this tithe wine is stored in the masters’ cellar, before being brought to Vienna or sold in the masters’ tavern.

Winemaking provides the inhabitants of Stixneusiedl with a moderate amount of wealth and so more cellars are added over time. Today there are 137 wine cellars on the idyllic Kellergasse in Stix, 73 on Viehtrift and 64 on Tiefer Weg. Several taverns are open on a regular basis and attract visitors from near and far with their romantic atmosphere. A snack of regional delicacies and a good glass of wine not only make the hiker’s heart leap for joy.
