Hoher Weg wine cellars

Lanes of wine cellars were originally intended as a place to process grapes and store wine near to the vineyards. With their charming atmosphere, 5 wine cellars invite you to enjoy a relaxing walks in Höflein. One of the prettiest lanes of wine cellars in Lower Austria, Hoher Weg, offers a marvellous panoramic view of the beautiful wine region, from the surrounding vineyards to the Lesser Carpathians.

The one-sided lane of wine cellars is just under a kilometre in length and comprises 45 buildings, the oldest dating back to 1643. A 200-year-old thatched pressing house invites you to find out more. The tree and stone presses, historical machines and wooden barrels on display offer an insight into time-honoured viticultural traditions. And the technically-minded will get a thrill from the registered designs on display in the wine cellar.

In earlier days wine presses could be found in the presshouses, which served as work- and recreation rooms. In the cellars wine was stored under optimal conditions. The constant, low temperature and high humidity of up to 80% means the wines mature slowly, are finer and age better as a result.

Those wishing to deepen their knowledge of wine can find out more along Höflein’s wine information trail, starting at Rebstock am Limes. Visitors to Höflein are greeted by modern, wrought iron artwork. There are around 20 different vines and many interesting boards to look at.

The wine region of Carnuntum may be a small one but it is one of the most exciting in Austria! Test the excellent quality of the Höflein wines for yourself, ideally in one of the cosy “Heuriger” taverns or directly from the winemaker at a tasting.
